子ども支援の国際NGO「セーブ・ザ・チルドレン」が給食がなくなる冬休みにあわせ、経済的に困難な状況にある子育て中の5006世帯に食品などを詰め合わせた「子どもの食 応援ボックス」を配布する。
このうち3割超の世帯が、子どもに十分な量のお米を食べさせられていないことも同団体によるアンケートによって明らかになった。
同団体は10月9日～11月11日、応援ボックスの希望者を対象に食事の状況についてアンケートを実施した。5006世帯のうち、94.2%がひとり親世帯だ。
「過去1週間に、給食以外で子どもが十分な量のお米を食べていると思うか」という問いに対し、32.6%が「経済的な理由であまり食べていない」と答えた。同じ理由でほとんど食べていないという世帯も2.4%あった。
お米を十分に食べられていないと答えた1754世帯に理由を複数回答で聞いたところ、「お米の高騰や物価上昇に対して賃金が上がっていないため」（76.1%）と「そもそもの収入が低いため」（72.9%）が上位を占めた。「公共料金や家賃の支払いを優先しているため」（49.9%）や「学用品費や教育費など子どもに関わる費用の支払いを優先しているため」（38.9%）という回答も多かったことから、日々の食事にしわ寄せがきていることがうかがえる。
お米を十分に食べられない時の工夫を尋ねると、「保護者が食べるお米の量を減らす」（85.5%）、「保護者の食事の回数を減らす」（57.5%）など子どもに食べさせるために大人が我慢を強いられている状況が見えてきた。
自由記述には、「今はお米が倍程高くなってしまい、思うように食べさせてあげていません。私は1日1食です」（40代女性、ひとり親、子ども2人）、「何もかも値上がりで手が出せない。十分な食べ物を用意できず我慢ばかりさせている。私が食べないようにしても足りないので困っ ている」（30代女性、ひとり親、子ども2人）、「 子どもが食べ盛りで、たくさん食べさせたいが、ご飯をあまり炊かないようにしている。年末年始、子どもがずっといるので食費が怖い」（30代女性、ひとり親、子ども3人）など（略）
