毎日新聞が3日に実施した世論調査で、43％の人が、自民党総裁選の決選投票で石破茂首相（総裁）に敗れた高市早苗前経済安全保障担当相の今後の政治活動に「期待する」と答えた。自民支持層では57％が「期待する」と回答しており、根強い人気を示した格好だ。石破政権と距離を置く高市氏の今後の動向に注目が集まる。
高市氏は、国会議員票と党員・党友票で争われた総裁選の1回目の投票で、石破氏を国会議員票で26票、党員票で1票上回り、9候補中トップに立った。過半数の得票に届かなかったため行われた決選投票では石破氏に逆転されたが、石破氏の215票に21票差の194票を獲得し、存在感の大きさを示した。
高市氏は総裁選後、記者団に「これからのことを今考えられる状況ではない」と述べるにとどめ、石破氏をどう支えるかと問われると「一国会議員として支える」と答えた。
