自民党の平井卓也広報本部長の親族3人が2020～21年、計4000万円を平井氏が代表を務める党支部に寄付し、所得税の一部を控除される税優遇を受けた疑いがあることが判明した。平井氏を巡っては、本人が1000万円を党支部に寄付し、税優遇を受けたことを既に認めている。専門家は「国民の政治参加を推し進める制度の趣旨にそぐわない」として、政治家本人だけでなく親族の寄付も税優遇の対象外にすべきだと指摘している。
租税特別措置法では、個人が政党などに寄付した場合、寄付額の約3割が税額控除されるか、課税対象の所得総額から寄付分が差し引かれる。
香川県選挙管理委員会が毎日新聞に開示した「寄付金（税額）控除のための書類」によると、平井氏の妻は20～21年に計2500万円、母親は20年に1000万円、長女は21年に500万円を平井氏が代表を務める「自民党香川県第1選挙区支部」にそれぞれ寄付し、控除対象として記載した。
毎日新聞は、平井氏の親族が実際に税控除を受けたか▽親族は平井氏と生計を一にしているか▽議員の親族が党支部への寄付で税優遇を受けるのは適切と考えるか――などを尋ねた。平井氏は「税理士からは何も問題はないと聞いています」と文書で回答した。
一方、平井氏は20年に1000万円、21年に500万円を党支部に寄付。これまでの取材に、20年分は税優遇を受けた事実を認めた上で「その後は党本部などにも確認し、控除は受けていない」と説明している。平井氏の親族が実際に受けた税優遇も、20年分のみだった可能性もある。
この問題を巡っては、平井氏の他、自民党の菅家一郎元副復興相や稲田朋美幹事長代理らが党支部への寄付で税優遇を受けていたことが毎日新聞の報道で発覚した。菅家氏は政治資金パーティー裏金事件で派閥からキックバック（還流）された資金を原資としていたことで強い批判を浴びた。
