宮城県の村井嘉浩知事は5日の会見で、県が土葬できる墓地を県内につくる検討を始めたことをめぐり、イスラム教徒への差別的な投稿がSNSで見られるとして「特定の宗教を狙い撃ちした様なやり取りは非常に問題」と懸念を示した。「寄り添う姿勢も必要」と改めて整備に意欲を見せた。
知事は「元々、日本は土葬文化であり、キリスト教も土葬がベース。皇室もかつては土葬されていた」と指摘。日本に長く住む外国人だけでなく改宗した日本人の要望もあることを踏まえ、「行政として考えていくべき大きな課題の一つ」と訴えた。
県には2月上旬現在で1200件を超える意見がメールや電話で寄せられ、大半が土葬墓地に反対だった。環境汚染を懸念する声もあったが、知事は「国全体がほぼ土葬しているところもある。そこで環境汚染があるかどうかよく調べた方が良い」と述べた。「たくさんの野生動物が自然の中で土に帰っている。土葬すると環境汚染になるというのはちょっと行き過ぎた議論ではないか」とした。（以下ソース）
